This doesn’t mean every child with attention challenges has a sleep disorder. Still, it does mean that sleep health deserves attention.

What Is Sleep Apnea in Children?

Sleep apnea is a condition in which breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. In children, the most common type is obstructive sleep apnea, which occurs when the airway becomes partially or fully blocked during sleep.
Occasional snoring is common in children, especially during colds. However, frequent loud snoring, gasping, or pauses in breathing may signal sleep disordered breathing or pediatric obstructive sleep apnea.
When a child experiences sleep apnea, their brain briefly wakes them to restart breathing. These repeated interruptions fragment sleep cycles, limit time in restorative REM sleep, and reduce overall sleep quality.
Even if a child appears to sleep through the night, their sleep may not be truly restorative.
Children with sleep apnea often present differently from adults. Instead of appearing excessively sleepy, some children become hyperactive or irritable. Over time, untreated sleep apnea can contribute to ongoing sleep disturbances and daytime challenges.
What Is ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), also known as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects focus, impulse control, and activity levels.
Common ADHD symptoms include:
- Difficulty concentrating
- Impulsivity
- Hyperactivity
- Emotional regulation challenges
An ADHD diagnosis is made by a qualified medical or behavioral health professional based on established criteria.
ADHD is a legitimate and well-researched condition. At the same time, certain sleep disorders can produce overlapping behaviors.
Because both ADHD and sleep disturbances can affect attention and mood, understanding the role of sleep health is an important piece of the puzzle.
The Overlap: Sleep Apnea and ADHD Symptoms
The connection between ADHD and sleep apnea concerns lies in how the brain responds to fragmented sleep. When children experience sleep deprivation from repeated airway interruptions, their ability to focus, regulate emotions, and manage impulses can decline.
In some cases, poor sleep quality can worsen ADHD symptoms. Children who are chronically sleep deprived may appear restless, distracted, or oppositional. These behaviors can look similar to those seen in both ADHD and sleep disorders.
What the Research Says
Research suggests that children diagnosed with ADHD have higher rates of sleep disturbances (including obstructive sleep apnea) compared with peers without ADHD, and that sleep-disordered breathing may contribute to attentional and behavioral challenges.
One 2024 study found that about 65% of children with ADHD had a sleep disorder, compared with 17% of control children, and that the incidence of sleep-disordered breathing (such as OSA) among those with ADHD ranged from approximately 25% to over 50% in some research.
Again, that does not mean every child with ADHD has a breathing issue. However, it highlights the importance of evaluating sleep patterns when behavioral concerns arise.
Exploring the link between sleep apnea and ADHD can help families and providers determine whether addressing sleep disturbances may support overall well-being.
Signs Parents Should Watch For

Parents researching sleep apnea and ADHD often begin by noticing nighttime symptoms. Signs that may suggest sleep disordered breathing include:
- Loud or frequent snoring
- Mouth breathing during sleep
- Restless sleep or unusual sleep positions
- Nighttime sweating
- Bedwetting beyond the typical age
- Daytime fatigue despite “full” nights of sleep
- Difficulty concentrating at school
- Irritability or hyperactive behavior
Some children with sleep apnea also experience sleep disturbances such as frequent awakenings or symptoms associated with other primary sleep disorders, including restless legs syndrome.
If your child’s sleep patterns include frequent snoring or disrupted sleep quality, it may be worth discussing a sleep study with your pediatrician. A sleep study is the standard tool for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea and other sleep disorders.
Why Airway Health Matters in Children
Airway development plays a significant role in sleep quality. The size and shape of a child’s upper jaw, dental arches, and facial structure can influence airflow during sleep.
Narrow arches or underdeveloped jaws may reduce space for the tongue and airway. When muscles relax during sleep, restricted airflow can contribute to obstructive sleep apnea or other forms of sleep disordered breathing.
Childhood growth stages are important windows for airway evaluation. Because the bones of the face and jaws are still developing, early awareness can be helpful in managing sleep apnea when structural concerns are present.
Left untreated, airway restriction and untreated sleep apnea may affect long-term sleep quality, behavior, and even facial development.
While not all children with ADHD experience sleep apnea, understanding the structural component can be valuable when addressing sleep apnea as part of a broader health plan.

Where Airway Orthodontics May Fit In
Airway orthodontics focuses on guiding jaw and arch development to support healthy breathing. In certain cases, expanding a narrow upper arch may create more room for the tongue and improve airflow.
It is important to clarify that airway orthodontics is not a cure for ADHD, and it is not a replacement for medical evaluation. However, when structural airway concerns are present, orthodontic treatment may be one core component of managing sleep apnea.
For some children, treating sleep apnea may involve multiple approaches, such as tonsil and adenoid evaluation, sleep hygiene support, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), or orthodontic care. Addressing sleep apnea through a collaborative model helps avoid one-size-fits-all assumptions.
When families explore the connection between ADHD and sleep apnea, pediatric orthodontics can be part of the conversation, particularly if dental development suggests restricted airflow.
The Importance of a Multidisciplinary Approach
Because sleep apnea and ADHD can overlap, proper diagnosis is critical. A pediatrician, sleep specialist, or behavioral health provider may recommend a sleep study to confirm obstructive sleep apnea before beginning sleep apnea treatment.
Managing sleep apnea often involves coordination between medical and dental professionals. Some children may require medical interventions, while others benefit from structural support as they grow.
Addressing sleep apnea thoughtfully means considering the whole child: their sleep patterns, behavior, growth, and overall health. No single approach fits every child experiencing sleep disturbances.
