Getting Started with Retainers

Invisalign from Greg Brown Orthodontics

If you are starting a removable retainer:

  • Once you receive your retainer, you will need to wear it full-time until your next visit (about 2 months).
  • Remove your retainer anytime you brush, eat, or drink anything other than water.
  • To prevent build-up on your retainer, rinse it with water every time you remove them. The retainer can be cleaned with dish soap and a toothbrush, but do not use toothpaste or mouthwash. If build-up does occur, you can soak your retainer in non-diluted white vinegar every few months for about 12 hours to remove any build-up.
  • We will plan to see you back in about 2 months to confirm the fit of your retainer. You will then transition to wearing your retainer only at night. Please bring your retainer to every appointment.
  • We recommend wearing your retainer at night for a lifetime. We know that sounds like a long time, but it is the only way to maintain your treatment results!
  • Retainer words to live by: “If it’s not in your face, it’s in the case!” This will help prevent it from being lost or broken. Beware of dogs 🙂 Pets love to eat retainers.
  •  If you have just completed a first phase of treatment, we will plan to see you back every 6 months while you continue to grow and the rest of your teeth come in.

  • If you have just completed comprehensive treatment, we will plan to see you back in 1 year to confirm the fit of your retainer. At that point, you graduate from the practice. We’re always happy to see you and evaluate any concerns after that, but there will be a fee associated with office visits beyond 1 year.
  • There is a replacement fee for lost or broken retainers. Please call our office right away so we can help address the issue before teeth start to shift.

If you have a bonded retainer:

  • Floss under the wire whenever you floss the rest of your teeth.
  • Try to brush from under the wire on the tongue side to help keep it clean.
  • There is a replacement fee for loose, broken, or lost retainers. Please call our office right away so we can help address the issue before teeth start to shift. If the retainer comes all the way off, please keep it and bring it with you to your repair appointment. This will save you an additional visit and the repair fee will be lower.

Congratulations on completing your treatment!
We had a blast getting to know and work with you!
